Il renseigne sur les altérations des habitats et les pressions physico-chimiques affectant les écosystèmes aquatiques, et contribue, avec les autres éléments de qualité biologique, à la détermination de l'état écologique des masses d'eau de surface.\nÀ noter que l'EQB invertébrés est souvent considéré comme particulièrement intégrateur des pressions multiples (pollutions, colmatage, hydromorphologie, modifications hydrologiques), alors que l'EQB poissons est davantage sensible à la connectivité, à l'hydrologie et à l'altération des habitats.\nDans les méthodes françaises, cet EQB est notamment évalué à l'aide d'indices dérivés des inventaires d'invertébrés benthiques (IBGN historiquement, puis I2M2 dans le cadre DCE).",
